5th Grade Curriculum

  • Texts: Select novels/literature, Sitton Spelling program, and Common Core resource books

    In reading, the students will read from a variety of chapter books such as Crash by Jerry Spinally and Absolutely Normal Chaos by Sharon Creech.

    Fifth grade continues to build important reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students read more challenging literature, articles, and other sources of information to grow their vocabulary. Students understand and summarize what they have learned, supporting their points with evidence. Students continue to develop their ability to gather, organize, interpret, and present information.

  • Texts: Progress in Mathematics by Sadlier-Oxford and Common Core Progress Mathematics by Sadlier School

    Fifth grade math focuses on:

    • developing fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions

    • extending division to two-digit divisors

    • integrating decimals into the place value system

    • operations with decimals to the thousandths

    • becoming fluent with whole number and decimal operations

    • understanding volume

  • Texts: Christ Our Life by Loyola Press and Family Life by RCL Benziger

    In religion, the students will learn that the sacraments are the center of our whole liturgical life and that they nourish and strengthen us. In other words, we participate in God’s own life through the sacraments.

  • Text: Science by Harcourt School Publishers

    In science, students will study units on plants, weather, matter, Earth and its recourses, and the human body.

  • Text: California Vistas by Macmillan/McGraw Hill

    Social studies will bring to life famous people, major events, changes in ways of travel, communication, and the principles that made America great. The student will be exposed to an overview of the life of our country from its conception to the present.
